Year 3 Maths

This week in Year 3 we have been working on subtracting through a method called ‘regrouping’. We have been using a story to help us remember when and how to regroup, leaving little “notes” so that the next-door neighbour doesn’t think we’ve stolen from them and call the police on us. After several days of serious practice and hard work we decided we deserved a bit of fun! We played a subtraction game with partners. There was a lot of laughter and several squeals of “you’re going to jail”. Who knew subtraction could be so fun!

Monday’s Assembly

Year Five’s Class Assembly on Monday morning was all about Chinese New Year. Bedecked in their lucky red clothes, Mrs Ellis’s class delivered an impressive assembly, which taught us the stories behind the formation of the Chinese Zodiac, the animals involved and their personalities. The whole assembly was charming with great acting and singing providing a fascinating insight into the celebrations of another culture.

RNLI Visit

Last Friday we were very pleased to invite a retired Lifeboat crewman from the RNLI to talk to the children about lifeboats and being safe in and around the sea. The assembly was highly entertaining and full of crowd participation – from recognising flags on the beach to shouting to attract help. In a good blend of fun and information, the children enjoyed a slightly different end to the week.

Netball and New Sports Teams Fleeces

Yesterday was the first outing for our new Sports Team Fleeces, which accompanied our netball team to their match at Blackheath High. Thanks again to the Friends of Benedict House and all the parents who have supported their initiatives over the last months – the children love them and I do think they look rather smart!

Children in Need Spectacular

Very well done to all the children who joined-in with Benedict House’s Children in Need last Friday. We had a fantastic day of fundraising which included the children wearing their own clothes to school for the day; their own swimming costumes in the pool; an outstanding cake sale featuring some delicious home baked Pudsey cakes; a wristband sale; and, of course, the Benedict House Talent Show.

The show saw some burgeoning talent, with 17 entries of an exceptionally high standard – ranging from dance to karate, from guitar to breakdancing. Our judges had a difficult task in picking the winners and finally decided to crown Raees with the top prize for his slick break dancing. In second was Aiyesha with a wonderful voice; third was Noah and his excellent rendition of Jessie J on his guitar; fourth was Thomas and some nimble fretwork creating the Harry Potter music and fifth were Femi, Maureen and Lauren for a guitar and vocal take on Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

The children’s outstanding efforts mean that Benedict House raised £425.90 for a very worthwhile charity!

Officially the Best 11+ Results in the Borough

We are delighted that our Year Six 11+ Results this year are officially the best in the borough.

Our children, as always, have worked exceptionally diligently to achieve the very best they can and we know they all will move to their next school of choice with a very solid academic foundation.

It is a clear demonstration that our small class sizes, excellent teaching and supportive community can produce some outstanding results.
